Financial Modeling

A Full Mill Financial Model created with WinGEMS was used by a fully integrated sulfite mill for strategic capital planning. The model was originally created to quantify the financial return of capital expenditures to determine the optimum scenario for capital improvements to the mill, The mill consisted of a sulfite pulp mill, groundwood pulp mill, recycle facility and eight paper machines producing a wide range of specialty paper grades.

The corporate planning group worked with mill operating personnel, mill engineering and corporate sales groups to produce a cohesive capital and strategic business plan. Central to this planning process was a WinGEMS simulation model which was integrated with an Excel financial spreadsheet. The simulation was used to determine the cost of removing mill machine and process limitations to take advantage of market opportunities. The impact of operational changes and capital costs were entered into the spreadsheet and this information was sent to the WinGEMS simulation, The WinGEMS simulation provided a complete mill water, fiber, energy and chemical balance. This balance was then returned to the spreadsheet and used to calculate true process costs. From this process, a twenty year financial evaluation, net present value (NPV) and incremental rate of return (IRR) were calculated, This procedure was utilized to evaluate different strategic business plans and market opportunities. The bottom line was a quantifiable capital plan that when presented for board approval resulted in implementation of the $XXX million dollar capital plan.
